Alexander Wang walks onstage in all black with a glass of rosé. The crowd cheers. He says he wanted to have a T-shirt cannon but they wouldn’t let him bring it into the space. Riotous laughter, followed by applause. No, this isn’t a scene from the latest Wang after-party—it’s the beginning of his Fashion Icons talk at the 92nd Street Y with Fern Mallis, arguably the most high-energy one Mallis has ever hosted.
Wang opened up about his fashion history to a crowd of downtown types clad in black leather jackets—“I haven’t been this uptown in years!” proclaimed a pair of girls. Which is to say, the whole evening was very on brand for the fun-loving designer, right down to the junk food—Magnolia cupcakes and banana pudding—served at a small reception after.
The best part about Alexander Wang, though, is that even with his many accolades—including the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Prize and two CFDA Fashion Awards—he’s still the same genuine Alexander Wang that will recommend a Meek Mill song to get you out of bed in the morning and admit he doesn’t buy art because he might stumble into it after a night of partying. His Skin-Care Regimen Is the Stuff of Legend
“I’m a diva when it comes to skin care,” he admits. “I use a lot of placenta and a lot of stuff that smells like it shouldn’t be put on your face. Things that really burn your face. Things that make your face really red, but then you wake up the next morning and you’re like, ‘Okay, I look amazing.’ ” Serums aside, Georgia Louise is his facialist.
