The Art of Layering

There are so many serums on the market! Even in my own Atelier, sometimes knowing what order to layer on can be overwhelming- but my philosophy is really quite simple! Serums are the most concentrated ingredients your skin can receive and can be an amazing treatment for healing, repairing and restoring radiance.

Your first layer is always your most liquid layer, this should be the most hydrating and have the least viscosity. I like to call it a “transporter” liquid to work through your skin to the deepest layer. This will be your serum with hyaluronic acid, like my Hydra Repair Elixir. Think of it as layering clothing, one layer after another. This will be your underwear of sorts!

After you let your hydrating serum sink in for a few minutes, apply your second layer. This will be your more oil or gel like textured serum. I would recommend something such as my Vitamin A or Stemcell Renewal Elixir which can even be cocktailed together to save you time in your routine. Vitamins A, C, E and retinol within the Vitamin A serum will work with the stemcells in the renewal elixir to soften the skin, reduce wrinkles, boost collagen and brighten the complexion.

Finally to top it all off, end with a finishing serum! Morning and night, it is so important to seal the pores with a finishing serum to restore and preserve the skin’s natural moisture barrier. My Vital Finishing Serum has a satin finish that is a perfect primer for makeup! Especially in the summer heat of New York City, with all the pollution and humidity this step is especially important to maintain and protect healthy skin. A finishing serum is the equivalent to the top coat of a manicure! You always need that last step before you go forward with your day or apply your night cream.
