You hear it all the time, exfoliation is key to brighter, healthy looking skin. The many choices out there however can be quite overwhelming, especially if you don’t know exactly what you are looking for. This is the best time of year to get back on your exfoliation game as we transition from Summer to Fall.

Depending on your skin, there are certain exfoliants that will make the world of a difference! Exfoliants are a key step in any skin routine to remove the dead layer of skin cells on the skin’s surface which can flake or create congestion. We asked Elite Esthetician, Sarah Smith for her recommendations:

  1. One of the best clarifying toners is the Sebu-Tone Clarifier from Environ. It contains Salicylic Acid and AHA’s which help to strip acne prone skin of excess sebum and the dead skin cells which are the root of the cause of breakout.

  2. Georgia Louise pH Perfecting Tonic is amazing for sensitive skin, it will gently exfoliate while soothing with chamomile to not cause any redness or irritation.

  3. If you have extra oily skin, you may not be exfoliating enough! Lotion P50 1970 is a cult classic- it is a liquid exfoliant that is quite potent, but sloughs away all dead skin cells that may be causing blackheads or excess sebum production throughout the day. However, be sure to be using a great moisturizer and SPF as it could be over-drying in some of the colder months to come.

  4. For younger skin, something a little easier and more gentle should be used. For teenage clients I suggest Elemis’ Gentle Rose Exfoliator. With Cucumber and Jojoba beads it is a great first exfoliator to add to a young person’s skin routine.

  5. Georgia's Enzyme Peeling Mask is a perfect weekly exfoliator, with Glycolic Acid and Papain Enzyme it restores dead, damaged skin cells while softening the texture of the skin and increasing moisture levels. It reveals a brighter and smoother complexion so this is a great product to add into anyone’s regimen.

  6. When clients have dry skin, they assume that exfoliation is not for them! But some light and hydrating exfoliation will actually improve skin texture as well as the look of the complexion. Environ’s Alpha-Hydroxy Night Cream is one of my favorites because it plumps, locks in moisture as well as utilizes AHA’s to slough away some of the dry, flaky skin cells you may be dealing with.
